The Glens organised a return to the United States for an end of season tour in late May/ early June 1986. The tour was put together by Ulsterman Noel Lemon, who was now resident in the States and promoting various football tournaments and events. Smithwick's seizing on the American theme released this shirt designed in an American Football style. Although the players trained in it and it was used by Smithwick's for promotional events in the lead up to the tour the Glens passed on it as team wear in favour of a less outrageous jersey.
In the end it was a good choice in the searing heat of Texas and Florida. The first game of the tour was played in Beaumont Texas in a game against Houston Dynamos for the Spindle Top Cup on May 30th. Spectators were charged $6 admission and the Glens won 3-1. The side beat Houston again two days later this time on penalties, before moving on to Florida to play Orlando Lions at Lake Brantley High School. On a night of breathtaking thunderstorms Glentoran won 3-0, the pick of the bunch a bullet header by Gerry Mullan. The only defeat of the tour came against Queens Park Rangers masquerading as Tampa Bay Rowdies but all in all it had proved to be a fantastic trip played out in this basic lightweight Umbro jersey worn with white shorts and green and red socks.
